Maiko Sakae was part of bandoru (band idol) ZONE, once an eight-member dance group (including ex-member Takayo, Tomoka [replaced Takayo after departure, early 2004], Mizuho, and Miyu) formed in 1997 under Studio RunTime Artists Development School. The group was later reduced to six, then four, with her and three other members (ex-member Takayo, Mizuho, Miyu) as part of the lineup.

ZONE's members each developed individual musical instrument aptitude in 2000. Aside from vocals, which each member has her own part, Maiko plays bass.

From 2004-2005, Maiko hosted her radio show, "Oh!Mai!Song."

December of last year (2004), Mizuho decided to leave the group. Maiko and the others thought about continuing with only three members left, but in January of this year (2005), the remaining members decided to discontinue. On the first of April 2005, ZONE had their first and last concert in Nippon Budokan.

At present, Maiko has formed MARIA. Last thirty-first of October, they were officially launched at Crystal Live, Runtime's graduation special. They released their first single on March 8, 2006, entitled "Chiisana Uta". Maiko wrote the lyrics for Chiisana Uta.
